Money and Taxes

Two tax systems, one retirement income. The interaction is the whole subject.

U.S. citizens generally keep filing American returns wherever they live. Becoming an Italian tax resident typically adds Italian obligations, and the U.S.-Italy treaty plus foreign tax credits decide how the two systems fit together.

Treatment differs by income type. Social Security, private pensions, retirement account withdrawals, and investment income are not automatically handled the same way, which is why generic answers are risky here.
